Surface-modified iron oxide nanoparticles were developed as the potential contrast agent for atherosclerosis imaging. The block copolymers, which can specifically bind to the receptor on activated macrophages of the atherosclerotic region, were prepared and coated onto the iron oxide nanoparticles. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized using the particle size analyzer, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. From the in vitro cellular uptake test, it was demonstrated that dextran sulfate-coated iron oxide nanoparticles have a promising potential as the contrast agent for atherosclerosis imaging. |
