Naringenin is a one of high value-added compounds in that it is a key precursor for biosynthesis of many different kinds of flavonoids and has diverse pharmaceutical activities by itself. Several attempts to improve naringenin production have been implemented, but it is difficult to engineer metabolic pathway in the most optimized manner for naringenin production. Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) is an efficient tool in metabolic engineering for strain development and optimization. However, so far, most approaches based on ALE mainly focused on strain development for nutrient availability and environmental stress. In this study, we developed a novel sensor-based ALE system through artificial RNA regulators responsive to naringenin and demonstrate that this system can be an effective strategy for improved production of naringenin and expand area of adaptive laboratory evolution. |
