Amidines react with CO2 in the presence of water or alcohol to form amidinium bicarbonate salts. The carbonated amidine can be reverted to the decarbonated form by bubbling with N2 gas. 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-ene (DBU) is one of amidines which shows good reversible CO2-sorption/desorption property. DBU was synthetically introduced into a polymeric system to give materials stability by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). This novel polyDBU were characterized by NMR, FTIR, GPC, and TGA. The polymer was mixed with alcohols so as to have reactivity to CO2. CO2 uptake by the polymer/alcohols system was studied as a function of temperature, pH, and gas pressure. The properties of the resulting ionic liquids will be also discussed. |
