Haematococcus pluvialis is the richest natural source of astaxanthin and the key production strain for the development of economically feasible CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) technology. However, an inefficient astaxanthin extraction step in the downstream process are still obstacles to the economical production of natural astaxanthin in H. pluvialis, because of its thick and chemical-resistance cell wall. Therefore, an inefficient astaxanthin extraction step hampered by the thick cell wall of the aplanospore (matured red cyst) in H. pluvialis was highly improved via the control of germination using the two factors, nitrate and light. To enhance the extraction efficiency, a slow rate of germination leads to a high maintenance of astaxanthin content in cells during the initial stage of germination. This pre-treatment method utilizing biological mechanism is eco-friendly extraction because only use natural sunlight and nitrogen source are used and will improve astaxanthin productivity. |
