Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer on earth and found in the cell walls of green plants, cotton, some algae, also some bacteria. Tunicate cellulose(TC) has a large aspect ratio, high specific surface area(150~170㎡/g), high crystallinity (95%) and many reactive sites due to hydroxyl groups, thought to have high mechanical properties. So, TC is a good candidate for reinforcing agent. Calcium carbonate(CaCO3), on the other hand, is the most abundant biomineral. It’s usually used for inexpensive reinforcements. In this study, cellulose whisker was extracted from tunicate by acid hydrolysis. Environmental-friendly TC-CaCO3 composites were fabricated by solvent casting, varying ratio of the two components. Morphology and transmittance of the composites was observed by FE-SEM(field emission scanning electron microscope) and UV-vis spectrophotometer. And mechanical and thermal properties of the films were measured by tensile testing and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). |
