Organic acids are one of specialty biomaterials produced in biorefinery such as fermentation processes. Since bioproducts can affects negatively on the microbial activity, the concentration of acids in fermentation broth need to be kept constant via continuous separation processes. In this study, the integrated membrane separation processes for energy-efficient organic acid removal and recovery is proposed. The fermentation broth was continuously clarified via ultrafiltration and a low pH nanofiltration processes. The effects of membrane fouling, operational conditions and separation efficiencies of each process were investigated in detail. To concentrate or recover the final bioproduct from clarified fermentation broth, the low energy forward osmosis process was firstly used in bioprocessing. |
