The surface of the silica spheres has been modified using various amounts of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]aniline (TMSPA). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) have been investigated before polymerization. EDS result shows large amounts of carbon and nitrogen are detected after surface modification. The –OH absorption peak became broader toward the 3450 cm-1 as the amount of TMSPA increased. The photonic crystal fabricated with unmodified silica spheres shows characteristic transmission attenuation through the photonic crystal centered at approximately 900 nm. The transmission attenuation effect reduced and shifted to the shorter wavelength for the photonic crystals fabricated with TMSPA-A, -B and –C. After polymerization of the aniline group, the spheres show colorless, brown color and black color for the TMSPA-A, -B and -C, respectively. |
