Light-emitting block copolymer electrolytes comprising partially sulfonated polystyrene (PSS) chains has been reported. Significantly enhanced fluorescence intensities were obtained for PSS-containing block copolymers upon stabilizing the PSS chains within nanosized domains. High fluorescent quantum yield over 30% was achieved in aqueous media by adjusting the type of self-assembled morphologies of PSS-containing block copolymers while that of PSS homopolymer lacking organization is as low as 5 %. Emission wavelength was fine-tuned by rational molecular design. In particular, non-significant self-quenching behavior was seen for these materials even they were fabricated in diverse forms such as solutions, thin films, and free-standing membranes. Interestingly, the fluorescence intensities of PSS-containing block copolymers were highly sensitive and selective toward Cu2+, with a detection limit of ppb values and rapid response time within 1 min. |
