Carbon fiber is manufactured by heating and carbonizing organic fiber under inert gas and it has excellent specific strength, elastic modulus, thermal and chemical resistance. Due to those advantages, carbon fiber has been extensively applied in high-tech fields such as aerospace, defense areas, and civil engineering as reinforcing material. However, PAN homopolymer as the carbon fiber precursor has hardly been used because of its high stabilization temperature, centralized heat release and poor solubility. Moreover, the mechanical and thermal properties of PAN carbon fibers are highly affected by chemical structure and content of comonomer in PAN copolymer. In this study, PAN co- or terpolymers as carbon fiber precursor were successfully synthesized using methyl acrylate (MA), fumaric acid (FA) or maleic acid (MA) as comonomers via stepwise solution polymerization according to the different composition and weight ratio. |
