Pyrolysis gas oil (PGO) is a byproduct of NCC process, which mainly consists of aromatic compounds. Major use of PGO is heating fuel; however, reinforced regulation of carbon emission restricts combustion of PGO. Meanwhile stable catalytic activity of carbon black for methane decomposition has been reported. Thermo-catalytic decomposition of PGO over carbon black could be attractive process in aspect of decrease of carbon emission and upgrade of fuel. In this study, a reaction characteristic for decomposition of PGO over carbon black is examined. The experiment was conducted with a quartz tube whose length is 640 mm and I.D. is 14.5 mm. In order to find the effect of temperature, reaction temperature was changed from 1123K to 1173K. Several kinds of carbon blacks were employed in order to investigate effect of surface area: rubber black, pigment black and conductive black. After decomposition of PGO, hydrogen and methane were produced. Catalytic activity of all carbon black employed was almost maintained with time. As temperature increased, yield of hydrogen increased and that of methane slightly decreased. |
