Synthesis and characterization ofcellulose diacetate(CDA)-graft-polycaprolactone(PCL) as a compatibilizer for CDA/PCL blends |

Cellulose diacetate was grafted with polycaprolactone by ring opening polymerization in the melt state at 140℃ using stannous octoate as a catalyst, where CDA with remaining hydroxyl groups worked as an initiator. By using adequate reaction conditions, the grafting reaction proceeded rapidly and was completed within 10~30 min. The grafting reaction was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The compatibility of the CDA/ PCL blend was enhanced with CDA-g-PCL, whose amount was 3~5 wt.-% of the blend. The tensile strength and morphology of the CDA/PCL blend were determined by UTM and SEM. It was found that the CDA/PCL blend has finer phase domains and an improved interfacial adhesion. Mechanical properties of the CDA/PCL blend were found to be significantly higher than those of the corresponding uncompatibilized CDA/PCL blend. |
