Chain-Growth Condensation Polymerization on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube |

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were functionalized with initiators for chain-growth condensation polymerization by “Tour” method. The SWNT-initiator system was found to be effective in chain-growth condensation polymerization of 4-fluoro-3-trifluoromethyl phenol salt, yielding poly(phenylen oxide) (PPO) functionalized SWNT. The resulting SWNT-PPO hybrid showed a good solubility in various kinds of organic solvents. TEM analysis showed a well dispersed SWNT in the solution. Interestingly, metal catalysts and graphitic side products contained in the SWNT did not affect the reaction. |
