Recently, harmful algal bloom (HAB), also termed “red tide”, has been recognized as a serious problem in marine environments according to climate changes worldwide. In the current study, we investigated that chitosan had a potential in controlling harmful without cytotocity to harmless marine organisms. Here, chitosan was proposed as new algicidal compounds combating HAB cells. it was effected to harmful algal cells by destabilizing their plasma membrane and inducing the efflux of intracelluar components. Moreover, its membranolytic action in chloroplasts induced a loss of chlorophyll a. Thus, chitosan examined in our study suggested to have an effectively controlling HAB within minimal toxicity on marine ecology.
