This talk will present a composite electrolyte using a combination of inorganic solid, polymer, and organic liquid for lithium based rechargeable batteries, illustrating the effect of electrode/electrolyte interfacing on electrochemical performance. The composite electrolyte cell minimizes the ineffective solid-on-solid interfaces common in all-solid-state cells. As a result, the electrochemical performance of the composite electrolyte cell is superior to that of a solid electrolyte cell and also to that of a pure liquid electrolyte coin cell. Moreover, this system improves battery safety for when sudden, higher temperatures are applied. The battery cell designed with a composite electrolyte can use air, water, or dissolved transition-metal redox couples in water as cathodes. This strategy allowed us to design a new battery system that can be used in a stationary energy storage application. |
