One of the important trends in the cosmetic and food industries is the demand for natural antioxidants from a wide variety of plants. Young green barley leaves are known to contain a significant amount of antioxidant flavonoids such as isovitexin and saponarin as well as natural pigments such as chlorophyll and beta-carotene. However, the presence of natural pigments in the final extract may limit its application to various cosmetic formulations. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the optimal conditions of supercritical carbon dioxide extraction for maximizing the extraction of pigments from young barley leaves, while minimizing the extraction of flavonoids. Cosolvent-modified supercritical CO2 extraction was carried out to investigate the effects of various operating parameters such as temperature, pressure, extraction time and weight ratio of cosolvent to CO2. |
