Effects of Fillers and Temperature on Fatigue Crack Growth Rate of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer |

Crack growth characteristics of elastomeric materials are an important factor determining the strength and durability of the products. In this study, we used a novel fatigue crack growth tester and studied the fatigue crack growth characteristic of filled EPDM compounds. Most elastomeric materials obey a power law dependency between the crack growth and the tearing energy (dc/dn = aTβ). Where, a and β are constants characteristic of the fatigue crack growth. The fatigue life (dc/dn) and tearing energy (T) of filled compounds were measured and the effect of the fillers, such as silica and carbon black, on the fatigue crack growth of EPDM was investigated. Silica and carbon black in EPDM compounds showed a retardation effect on fatigue crack growth rate. The fatigue life decreased when temperature increased from 40 to 120℃. We will also present the effects of the amount and the types of fillers on fatigue crack growth characteristics of EPDM rubber. |
