Preparation of nanoscaled polystyrene latex particles was achieved via emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization technique. In a synthesis system of styrene monomer, acrylic acid, and potassium persulfate in the water, ammonia solution was added in order to control the particle size and morphology. Using this technique, monodisperse polystyrene latex particle synthesis in the size range of 100~400nm was achieved, which was hardly achieved without use of surfactant. The polystyrene latex particles size increased by the addition of ammonia solution. In addition, the surface roughness increased with decrease of ammonia contents. These size and morphology changes are thought to be influenced by the charge interaction between acrylic acid and ammonium anion. This outcome provided an insight for the charge interaction between comonomer and ammonia which influences on the morphology of polystyrene latex product. |
