Comb-shaped polymer is a model polymer of polymers with long-chain branches which have different physical properties such as viscosity. In this study, chloromethyl groups were statistially introduced to a polystyrene (PS) backbone prepared by anion polymerization. Comb-shaped PS was prepared by reacting PS anions to the chloromethyl groups in the PS backbone. So the comb PS series which has nearly uniform length branches but different number of branches are obtained. Byproducts including unreacted branch PS were removed by fractional precipitation. Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) separation cannot resolve the comb PS with different number of branches due to small hydrodynamic volume change with branch number change. On the other hand, Temperature Gradient Interaction Chromatography (TGIC) was effective in resolving the comb PS with branch number by virtue of its sensitivity to molecular weight. Detailed branch analysis of the comb-shaped PS using TGIC beyond SEC will be presented. |
