Synthesis of cyclic polymers has attracted research interest in the polymer science over the past few decades because of their absence of chain termini in contrast to their linear counterparts. Therefore a number of methods for the construction of a diversity of polymer topologies have been studied. In spite of vigorous research for the development of methods for synthesizing them, an efficient strategy for the preparation of cyclic polymers remains challenge due to difficulties in synthesis of precisely defined structures and purification to isolate pure cyclic polymers. In this study, the pure watermelon-shaped polystyrene was prepared by combining ATRP and "Click" chemistry with separation by fractional precipitation and flash chromatography. Their structure was confirmed by 1H NMR, FT-IR and the GPC analysis showed the isolation of pure multicyclic polymers. The Tg value was determined to be 91.2℃ for the watermelon-shaped polystyrene, which was higher than that of star precursor, 67.7℃. |
