Optimization of the drug incorporation into PVA hydrogels |

In this study, lidocaine loaded-poly(vinyl alcohol) (LL-PVA) hydrogels were designed and prepared by using γ-irradiation followed by freeze-thawing. A local anesthetic, lidocaine was incorporated into the PVA hydrogels with varying the drug loaded conditions to optimize the lidocaine release rate. When the PVA contents was 20 wt% and the irradiation dose at 25 kGy, the PVA based hydrogels can provide satisfactory physical properties such as a gel content and water absorptivity. The optimized LL-PVA hydrogel showed under in vitro conditions a rapid release the lidocaine over a couple of hours. It seems that the drug release rate is related to the state of the drug incorporated in the hydrogel matrix. |
