Humectant Effect on Gamma-irradiated PVA Hydrogel Followed by Freezing-thawing |

Absorption capacities of exudates from wounds are very important factor to improve the wound healing efficiency in hydrogel applications. This present work is aimed at focusing on these factors and performed in aqueous fluids (pseudo-extracellular fluid, horse serum and water) to create the desired hydrogels for an advanced wound dressing. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were crosslinked by using γ-ray irradiation followed by freezing-thawing (freezo) process. The absorption capacities (Ab) and gel content (Gc) of the PVA hydrogels were investigated as a function of humectant such as a glycerin. The Gc and Ab decreases with increasing glycerin content. This indicates that the ordered associations of PVA are influenced by glycerin content. |
