Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical technique to make detailed pictures of the anatomy and the physiological phenomena inside the body non-invasively and without ionizing radiation. Due to its high spatial resolution over the entire tissue, MRI is a powerful imaging modality in clinical applications. MRI contrast agents (CAs), mostly gadolinium-based CAs, are widely used to improve the visibility of a particular tissues or organs of interest. Here, we synthesized several gadolinium-based CAs and investigated their MRI contrast effect depending on physiological conditions such as pH. Because extracellular pH decrease is associated with abnormal events including tumor growth and metastasis, our study may provide a new opportunity in MR imaging to visualize a number of diseases. |
