Development of a chrome free corrosion resistance conversion coating on zinc plating |

Chromate conversion coating is a type of surface treatment to zinc plating for corrosion prevention of steel. This process uses various chromium compounds which include hexavalent chromium. However hexavalent chromium is carcinogens, so high toxic chromium compounds use is regulated worldwide. Therefore, the development of chromium free corrosion resistant conversion coatings for zinc plating is required. We used vanadium as alternative to chromium, and succeeded in formation of vanadate conversion coatings and have found that it has corrosion resistance. However the corrosion resistance of the vanadate conversion coating falls short of the chromate conversion coating. This study aims to improve the corrosion resistance of the vanadate conversion coatings as chromium free conversion coating. Therefore, we studied improvement of corrosion resistance of the vanadate conversion coating by clarification of the vanadate conversion coating film composition and optimization of the solution composition. It was found that the vanadate conversion coating consists of the vanadate oxide which is mainly V2O3 by the results of the surface analysis. Also, it was found that NaNO3 of the solution which consists of NaVO3, NaNO3 and malonic acid has an effect to corrosion resistance. We developed the optimum condition of the vanadate conversion solution and film forming by optimization of concentration of NaNO3. |
