For understanding the hierarchical superstructure of dendronized norbornene-based polymer chains, a series of polynorbornenes is newly designed and synthesized with programmed dendrons (PD3P and EP3P). We successfully synthesized polynorbornene via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). X-ray scattering and diffraction studies are carried out to investigate the molecular packing structure. Based on the X-ray scattering combined with POM microphotographs, PD3P is self-assembled to the ColN LC phases. Polynorbornene with EP3D dendrons formed SmA LC phase as a result of nanophase separations between the polynorbornene main-chains, the triethylene oxide linkers, the alkyl tails and the biphenyl mesogens. Furthermore, EP3P shows a highly ordered smectic crystal phase with a monoclinic lattice.
