Organic phosphorus compounds are regarded as one of the most effective flame retardants(FR) in polymer matrix. We compared two FRs, one is triphenyl phosphate(TPP) and the other is TPP with bulky substitutes, t-butyl groups(MS-75). To address the role of tert-butyl subsituents on phenyl ring in molecular dynamics, we performed secondary ion mass spectrometry(SIMS) measurements of the self-diffusion, and found that the diffusion coefficients of MS-75 were somewhat lower than those of TPP at T<Td, decomposition temperature of FRs, contradicting to the results from computer simulation measured at T>Td. We, therefore, used thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) for FR-PC composites at different heating rates, and calculated the activation energy differences. We found the decomposition kinetics of MS-75 was much different to that of TPP. These results were correlated with the simulation results, where the presence of tert-butyl subsituents decrease the molecular mobility at a high temperature. |
