Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) actuator, consist of an ion exchange membrane (IEM) sandwiched between two noble metal electrodes, has relatively light weight and shows large displacements in low voltage at water-swollen state. Thus the IPMC is utilized in various potential applications such as biomedical micro devices and artificial muscles. However, performance of the IPMC is gradually deteriorated during actuation due to the evaporation and the electrolysis of water. This electrical instability is one of the most serious problems to put the IPMC to practical use. To enhance the electrical stability of the IPMC, we introduced some solvents as the alternative solvent for the IPMC. Solvent uptake of IPMC was measured for each solvent. Tip displacement, generated force and lifetime of the IPMC were measured through the actuation performance test. Electrical property and electrical stability was confirmed by impedance analysis and electrolysis voltage obtained from I-V curve. |
