Ferroptosis is a recently recognized form of regulated cell death that differs from traditional apoptosis, necrosis and results from iron-dependent reactive oxygen species(ROS) and lipid peroxidation. Iron, as an essential transition metal iron for life, plays an important role in regulating cell death. Here, we applied the lysosomal activity of regulation of cellular iron equilibria and ROS generation, designed cancer-targeting nanoparticles by fine-tuning physicochemical properties. By investigating cancer cell that uptaken nanoparticles, we show these nanoparticles can induce a form of programmed iron-dependent cell death. The regulatory system, ROS levels and lipid peroxidation, inhibits tumor growth and is expected to have therapeutic potential in the future.
