In this work, we have prepared folic acid conjugated poly(N-isopropylacylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels containing iron oxide nanoparticles for uterine cancer cells (HeLa) targeting by precipitation polymerization. To conjugate folic acid with microgels, the PNIPAM were copolymerized with amine-functionalized monomers, which can be reacted with carboxyl group of the folic acid via EDC/NHS reaction. Folic acid conjugation of microgels was confirmed with zeta potential measurement by observing shift of the isoelectric point. The biocompatibility of this folic acid conjugated microgels were studied by MTT assay. To study the effect of target specific ligands, cellular uptake of the folic acid conjugated microgels in HeLa cells was performed. Shrinking of PNIPAM microgels containing iron oxide nanoparticles could be induced in response to visible light because iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) generate the heat by absorption of light. |
