Defect-healing graphene oxide membrane for high performance of vanadium redox flow battery |

Selective ion transport in nanofluidic-channels inside the graphene oxide (GO) laminate is currently deployed for wide applications such as water purification, electrodialysis and various ESS systems. A randomly stacked 2D nanosheets leads to undesired defects as the thickness of the GO layer decreases. Herein, we prepared GO thin film composite membrane and subsequently modified it using layer-by-layer (LBL) coating of polyelectrolytes (Polyethyleneimine and Nafion ionomer) to enhance H+/V selectivity. Vanadium permeability of the modified GO membrane was 143 times lower compared to the commercial Nafion membrane. The result shows the unintended defects successfully covered. Our attempt emphasizes the facile and cost effective approach to develop a new class of membrane material for efficient and sustainable VRFBs. |
