The effect of surface roughness on adhesion strength of metal to polymer single-lap joint |

Polymer composites in conjunction with metal by adhesive have been used in many areas. We propose a new method that fabricating the metal/polymer single-lap joints using chemical treatment without adhesive. Instead of applying an adhesive on aluminum substrate, we fabricated rough aluminum by chemical etching and expected that etched aluminum which had micro-structured led to the porous surface needed to provide a large bonding area at metal/polymer interface. The single-lap joints of polymer and etched aluminum were fabricated using hot-press under particular heat and pressure condition. PA6 and glass-fibre reinforced PA6 composite were used in lap-shear test to compare the effect of the filler. Lap-shear test specimens were tested in tensile load with universal testing machine. This study focuses on the effect of substrate roughness on metal/polymer joint and adhesion improvement between a metal and a polymer interface. |
