In this study, various molecular weight (MW) silk fibroins (SF) were prepared by controlling the dissolution condition. The effect of MW on the structure, morphology, and properties of regenerated silk fibroin fibers by wet spinning and electrospinning was investigated. High MW SF samples (dissolved in LiBr and CaCl2/H2O/EtOH for 3 min) showed a better wet- and electro-spinnaiblity while low MW SF sample (CaCl2/H2O/EtOH for 3 hr.) exhibited a bad spinnability. As MW of SF increased, higher maximum draw ratio and breaking strength were obtained. Regardless of MW of SF, beta sheet conformation was observed in wet- and electro-spun SF fibers. |
