Aromatic polyazomethines, an interesting class of liquid crystalline polymers having carbon-nitrogen double bonded in the main backbone, have been studied intensively due to their good thermal stability, mechanical strength, and optical properties. However, low solubility or infusibility of aromatic polyazomethines limits their processability and practical application. To overcome the shortcomings, in this study we have synthesized a series of aromatic polyazomethines containing cyano functional group via the polycondensation reaction of terephthalaldehyde, isophthalaldehyde, and 2-cyano-1,4-phenylenediamine in NMP solvent. The molecular and liquid crystalline structures of the aromatic polyazomethines are characterized by using NMR, FT-IR, and polarized optical microscopy. The thermal transition, thermal stability, and mechanical properties are investigated as a function of the comonomer composition in the aromatic polyazomethines with aids of DSC, TGA, and UTM, respectively.. |
