In this study, we have synthesized cobalt ferrite silver (CoFe2O4/Ag) nanocomposites as an antibacterial agent using facile impregnation method. First of all, the cobalt ferrite NPs were formed by glycothermal method at 220oC for 6 hours. The particles size of cobalt ferrite as a template was approximately 30-50 nm sized. Briefly, the cobalt ferrite as a raw material was mixed in silver nitrates aqueous solution under vigorous stirring. The silver ions were reduced using tri-sodium citrate as a reducing agent. Then, the suspension of cobalt ferrite and silver was heated up to 150 oC till well dried. The obtained nanocomposites were calcined at 600 oC for 2 hours with heating rate 10 oC/min to eliminate excess amount of contaminants. The characterization of nanocomposites was carried out using XRD, FE-SEM, MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) test, disk diffusion assay. The antibacterial activities of the CoFe2O4/Ag nanocomposites against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria) and Bacillus Subtilis (Gram-positive bacteria) are studied in liquid systems and on agar plates as a solid phase. The results show that the CoFe2O4/Ag nanocomposites are extremely efficient against both type of bacteria as Gram-negative and Gram-positive. |
