Photobioreactor design is one of the most important things for feasible biomass production in industry. This study aims to the geometric design in the photobioreactor that can affect the biomass production of microalgae. Three types of photobioreactor are designed which have the differences in geometry. They are compared to the original one. Hydrodynamics, mass transfer coefficient (kLa), and biomass production are investigated under different gas flow rates (0.1, 0.2 and 0.3vvm). Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is chosen to compare the difference in biomass production of different photobioreactors due to its high growth rate. Results show that, the new geometric photobioreactor outperforms the control one with higher kLa, high resistance to shear stress effect and can be feasible apply in the industrial production. |
