Thermoplastic composites consisting of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), nylon 6, MWCNT and graphite powder were prepared via following steps. First, nylon 6/MWCNT masterbatchs were prepared using twin-screw extruder. Second, the fabricated masterbatch and PPS were also melt mixed using twin-screw extruder. The resulting extruded products were mechano-chemically coated with graphite powder using mechanofusion equipment. Specimens for tensile test were prepared by hot pressing. The hot pressed specimens without mechanofusion failed to be molded, while mechano-chemically treated composite particles were molded into plate-like sheet. To further enhance the mechanical properties, differing amounts of carbon fibers were incorporated in the composite. We found the mechanical properties were proportional to the amounts of carbon fibers regardless of mechanofusion process. The thermoplastic composites prepared would be promising as bipolar plates for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC). |
