A highly fluorescent diphenylamino-s-triazine bridged p-phenylene vinylene polymer was synthesized with Wittig condensation reaction to show high quantum efficiency. Using this fluorescent polymer, metal sensing for several heavy metals such as Al3+, Au2+ and Ru3+, which are ubiquitous and cause severe impacts on human health, has been studied based on emission change in aqueous solution. This polymer showed a different quenching efficiency depending on the kinds of metals. This emission quenching originated from the interaction of metal complexes with a conjugated polymer backbone because triazine group contained multident nitrogen ligands showing high binding affinities for metal ions due to a chelation effect. This tunable emission characteristic allowed us to apply them to a fluorescence sensory probe for metal detection. Also, this triazine bridged fluorescent polymer could be used for cell imaging due to high quantum efficiency as well as high fluorescent intensity. |
