Plastics are versatile, ubiquitous and cheap to produce. But they are almost everlasting, and therein lies a major environmental problem today. Plastics are weathered and fragmented via ultraviolet radiation and mechanical abrasion into micro- and nano-sized particles. Microplastic and nanoplastic can have a wide range of influences on the natural environment and organisms, so it is necessary to investigate the mechanism of their occurrence. In this study, we investigated the generation mechanism of microplastics and nanoplastics from polypropylene, high density polyethylene, nylon 6 and polystyrene based on an environment that simulates an real land environment. The size of microplastic closely related to the cracks on the plastic surface due to the photodegradation. We propose that nanoplastics are generated in the crack initiation region and microplastics are generated in the crack grow region. |
