Elastomer-based nanocomposites with organically modified montmorillonites |

For the improvement of the interaction between elastomer and montmorillonite (MMT), organic modifiers were synthesized by the variation of the subsituents on ammonium ion and used to modify Na+-MMT. We could observe the changes of interlayer distance of organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) depending on the chemical structures of organic modifier by x-ray diffraction and OMMTs containing the longer alkyl chains exhibited the higher d-spacings. Nanocomposites could be prepared by melt-compounding or solution-process of elasotmers with various OMMTs followed by hot-press vulcanization if necessary. Tensile strength and Young's modulus of pristine elastomer were much improved in comparison with those of elastomer/OMMT nanocompsites. |
