Synthesis and Characterization of 3-Pentadecylphenol based Comb-like Polymers for Cold Flow Improvers of Diesel |

Comb-like polymers which have paraffin-like side chain moiety were synthesized from 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP), a cardanol derivative, for middle distillate flow improver (MDFI). Two kinds of comb-like polymer, novolac resin (NPDP) and acrylic polymer (P(PDPA)) were synthesized, characterized, and applied to MDFI. A few amounts of these polymers can co-crystallize with the paraffin in diesel and improve the cold properties (cloud point, cold filter plugging point, pour point). As a result, P(PDPA) could improve all the cold properties while NPDP could lower pour point only. It is noteworthy that P(PDPA) exhibited similar MDFI performance to that of conventional MDFI based on EVA polymer. |
