Cellulose is cheap, biodegradable, renewable, and the most abundant natural polymer in the world. And it has been utilized for many applications including the immobilization of proteins, antibodies, coatings, artificial artery and organs as well as the formation of cellulose composites with synthetic polymers and biopolymers. In this study, cellulose was blended with polypropylene(PP)/poly(lactic acid)(PLA) in a twin-screw extruder. Polypropylene-g-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH) was used as the reactive compatibilizer for the blend. And cellulose was modified by two different methods. Mechanical and thermal properties of the PP/PLA/cellulose blends were characterized by using TGA, and UTM. The morphologies of the PP/PLA/cellulose blends were obtained by using SEM after Pt coating. Biodegradability of PLA/cellulose in a controlled compost was measured using a Microbial Oxidative Degradation Anlyzer (MODA) according to ISO 14855-2. |
