Sulfonated hydrophilic-hydrophobic alternating multiblock copolymers (SMPESs) containing phenolphthalein anilide (PPA) as a cardo group were prepared by the coupling of hydrophilic and hydrophobic oligomers. The hydrophobic oligomer was prepapred by 4,4’-hydroxyphenylsulfone and 4,4’-chlorophenylsulfone. On the other hand, hydrophilic oligomer prepared by disodium-3,3-disulfonate-4,4-chlorophenylsulfone and PPA by varying the different mole ratio to control the degree of sulfonation. Post-sulfonation process were carried out to add sulfonic acid group in the pendant phenyl rings of cardo PPA unit of synthesized SMPESs by using conc. sulfuric acid. Sulfonated multiblock copolymers (MSBPs) with sulfonated units of 15, 20 and 25 mol% were successfully synthesized for proton exchange membrane. The structural and properties will be studied by FT-IR spectroscopy, 1H-NMR spectroscopy, TGA, water uptake, ion exchange capacity and proton conductivity. |
