Organically Modified Silica Coatings on Polystyrene |

Organically modified silica materials coated on polystyrene (PS) beads have been prepared as moving particles for a toner-type E-paper application. Micrometer sized PS polymer beads were synthesized by dispersion polymerization using PS monomer and cationic radical initiators. Silica was then coated from TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) and organosilanes in the presence of ammonia catalyst. TEOS and organosilane are hydrolyzed and condensates on positively charged PS surface, offering low surface energy to the core-shell particles. The low surface energy of the particles limits particle agglomeration observed commonly in cells of E-paper devices. Moreover, particles with low surface energy are potentially used water/oil repellent coatings. |
