The use of organic redox compounds as cathode materials holds a great potential in sustainable energy storage. However, their practical application to battery systems is limited particularly due to their intrinsic low operating voltage. Here, we present high voltage organic cathode materials based on conventional redox-shuttles in the battery systems, which have guaranteed high redox potential and reversibility. Among the redox-shuttle materials, phenoxazine and phenothiazine derivatives showed high and applicable voltage as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. Various molecular design strategies for reducing solubility with minimal loss of capacity applied to improve the stability, and their structure-property relationships were systematically investigated. Through our works, conventional redox-shuttles have shown the promising potential to be used for high voltage organic cathode. |
