Engineering of film texture allows manipulating charge transport and transfer properties of photoelectrodes for efficient solar water-splitting. Herein, we report direct solution growth of (00l)-textured BiVO4 photoanode (t-BVO), for the first time. Synthetic parameters such as growth temperature, time and molarity were optimized, and we found that the molarity of precursor solution plays a crucial role in developing the (00l)-texture. The surface chemical state, optical, and electrochemical properties of the (00l)-textured BVO photoanode were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, respectively. Interestingly, t-BVO exhibited Bi-rich surface and large amount of oxygen vacancies. Optimally prepared t-BVO achieved a high photocurrent density over 2.6 mA/cm2 (~90% Faradaic efficiency) at 1.23 V vs. RHE under simulated sunlight illumination (100 mW/cm2). |
