The poly(vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl stearate) copolymer has a characteristic amphiphilic structure, may be applied as surfactant to emulsification, emulsion stabilization, and separation systems, etc. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl stearate) copolymer containing different syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was synthesized by the reaction of PVA with stearoyl chloride. For the different syndiotactic PVA, precursor poly(vinyl pivalate-co-vinyl acetate) (poly(VPi-co-VAc)) was obtained via radical copolymerization of different composition of vinyl pivalate and vinyl acetate with carbon tetrachloride as a telogen and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Then, resulting poly(VPi-co-VAc) was hydrolyzed with 25% KOH-CH3OH solution followed by reacting with stearoyl chloride. The synthesized poly(VPi-co-VAc), PVA, poly(vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl stearate) were characterized by GPC, FT-IR and 1H-NMR, etc.
