Hydrogel actuators are water swollen polymer networks that reversibly change their dimensions or shapes when external stimuli cause local or global changes in network swelling. Hydrogel actuators with tunable speed and motion are highly sought after to fulfill applications in various fields, including biology, medicine, microfluidics, and robotics. Light-driven hydrogel actuators are particularly attractive systems because light is easily controlled with higher spatial and temporal resolution than other stimuli. In this work, we synthesized thermo-sensitive hydrogels functionalized with gold nanorod, which have high light absorption and transform photon energy into heat. The hydrogel was fabricated by photopolymerization and tested as light-stimulated actuators. We analyzed their physiochemical properties such as swelling-deswelling behaviors and bending properties. |
