제목 Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Fluorine-containing Copoymers for Polymer-dispersed Liquid Crystals
초록 Polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) are dispersions of liquid crystal droplets in a polymer matrix. Currently, many applications of PDLC materials are based on their remarkable electro-optical properties and their high dielectric, optic, and magnetic anisotropies. In this study, a series of fluorine-containing copolymers, i.e., poly(acrylamide-co-fluorostyrene) with different fluorine content, was synthesized by reaction of acrylamide with 4-fluorostyrene in the presence of N,N'-azobisisobutyronitrile initiator, as shown in Scheme 1. The structures of the resulting copolymers were characterized by means of FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The effect of hydrophobic moieties on the optical properties of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) composite films was also investigated. Fig. 1 shows FT-IR spectra of the copolymer, which exhibits characteristic absorption peaks at 1618, 1510, and 1454 cm-1 are due to the aromatic ring vibrations. The absorption peaks appearing at 1083 and 1665 cm-1 is attributed to the C-F and C=O groups, respectively. Contact angle of the copolymer films is decreased from 26 to 21o as the hydrophobic moieties increased. This can be attributed to NLC molecules are oriented with their nonpolar groups toward the hydrocarbon part of the polymer chains.
