Cyclic polymers with various architectural topologies have attracted research interest in the polymer science over the past few decades. Because of difficulties in synthesis of precisely defined structures and purification to isolate pure cyclic polymers, an efficient strategy for the preparation of cyclic polymers remains challenge even now. In this study, the eight-shaped polystyrene was effectively prepared by combining ATRP and “Click” reaction between an azido-terminated polystyrene and dialkynyl coupling agent in diluted solution. Eight-shaped and branched polystyrenes were obtained simultaneously due to imperfect chain-end functionality of precursor polymer from ATRP. Eight-shaped polymers were separated by selective fractionation from branched polymers and characterized by MALDI-TOF MS, ¹H NMR, FT-IR and DSC. |
