Autothermal reforming of methane and steam over Ni/Al2O3 catalyst bed covered with annular-shaped Pt/Al2O3 catalyst bed: Two-dimensional CFD modelling and simulation |

Hydrogen production is getting high importance for green energy production. It is involved in power-to-gas technology as energy carrier that afford converting the intermittent renewable energy into safe and efficient storable fuel. In this study, a numerical investigation was conducted on the Autothermal reactor, in which the exothermal methane combustion and the endothermal methane steam reforming are involved, for hydrogen production over Ni/Al2O3 catalyst bed covered with annular-shaped Pt/Al2O3 catalyst bed in same cylindrical channel. The results showed high efficiency of the reformer depicting a methane conversion of 40 % and hydrogen yield of 17 %. Moreover, the thermal behavior were improved by providing a smooth temperature profile, limitation of the severe temperature gradient that induces hot and cold spot, and low maximum average temperature compared to traditional ATR reformer which helps in reducing the cost of the reaction via broadening the used materials rang. |
