A salinity gradient power (SGP) system holds a great potential to generate continuous and clean electricity for 24 hours. This study demonstrates the membrane structure design to improve power density of pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) systems. In typically, the support layer must have low structure parameters to reduce the internal concentration polarization which dramatically reduce the efficient osmotic pressure difference at the interface of an active layer. One of the best candidates for support layers is electrospun nanomat due to high porosity, short tortuosity, and high mechanical strength (reduce the thickness). The power density was 12 W/m2 which is quite so high for commercialization when the fully aromatic polyamide was introduced as the active layer. |
